LuzTranslation is a selection
of my street-level, color photographic portraits from Mexico, made
during the past three years.
The constantly changing social landscape of Mexico presents a
fascinating panorama for any photographer, especially one who looks
in at it !s people with a vision formed on the outside.
But attempting to satisfy my own curiosity and to identify flesh
and blood Mexicans who, by their presence in a photograph, express
something much grander, is a true challenge.
In a society reinventing itself while surrounded by the all-too-real
limitations of centuries-old traditions, change tends to be jarring.
Still observing unwritten rules of conduct while they clamor for
justice, naked protestors are flanked by nattily dressed businessmen
who pass by unconcerned, heads slightly "averted, eyes firmly
focussed on the Blackberry.
As a photographer, I first translate these vistas into discernable
metaphors that I can understand; then I create tableaux in two dimensions
for others to explore.
All my photography is translation. From a multi-dimensional world
of temporal elements to the Cartesian plane of the photograph.
Light strikes a surface and the interaction is recorded. A translation
of the light takes place. A... Luz Translation.
But it is also more than that... |
